The following essay was submitted by my grandson in response to questions about his interest in serving on the Student Council of his elementary school in rural eastern Pennsylvania. In my opinion it is a statement worthy of note.

Grade 4,
Mrs. Palange,
Why do you want to be involved in Student Council? I want to serve on Student Council because I want to be a leader and I want to stop all bullying at school. I don’t like it when people when are made fun of, and I want to encourage people to stop picking on others. I like to help people who get into trouble at recess and on the bus. When somebody is picking on somebody else, I always stand up for the person who is getting picked on. I don’t like teasing and I don’t like bullying. I would like Oley Valley Elementary School to be a bully-free zone, and I would like our entire community to be bully-free, too. We could set up a booth at the Oley Fair and other special events to advertise our “bully-free” project and ask others to commit to not bullying by signing a contract and contributing $1.00 toward the OVES PTO.
What qualities do you have that will make you a good Student Council member? I think I will be a good Student Council member because I care about our school and because I want our school to be the best it can be. And I want to spread the message that being a bully is a waste of time, it will get you into trouble, and it doesn’t do any good for anybody. If you live right, and are nice to others, it will all payoff for you someday.
I am responsible by being loyal to my friends, and I do not lie. I always tell the truth, even if it means sometimes I get in trouble. I always try to make good choices and I’m always kind to everyone. I work hard to be a good student and a good friend to others. I also want to work hard on my values and work skills by joining Cub Scouts, which I will be starting after fall soccer season ends.
